17世紀，荷蘭人航海到台灣，以為東部有金礦，曾經三次從台南航海到東台灣尋寶，最後只在花蓮和蘇澳附近的一條河流，找到少部份沙金。其實，荷蘭人當時如果再往北走一點到金瓜石就能找到金礦了。這個錯失在台灣尋寶的有趣歷史，被國立台灣史前文化博物館的研究人員發現，並且花了兩年收集各種資料，做成特展展出。
這場展覽叫做「尋找東方金銀島」。為了讓民眾能回到17世紀荷蘭人到台灣尋寶的故事中，展覽場地特別訂製了5分之1大小的荷蘭帆船入口意象，跟著故事尋寶。
國立台灣史前文化博物館研究人員花了兩年的時間，研究數十萬字17世紀荷蘭人航海到台灣的「熱蘭遮城」日誌，發現當時荷蘭人曾經三次登陸東部海岸尋找黃金，但後來只在花蓮和蘇澳交界，發現一條有含有少量沙金的黃金河。

雖然沒有找到金礦，但「熱蘭遮城」日誌記載，最後卑南族人還護送荷蘭人回到台南，荷蘭人結交到台灣原住民的朋友。
這樣有趣的歷史考古尋寶故事，更意外發現，蘭嶼原住民透過海上貿易，成了當時最會鍊金的台灣原住民族。
為了讓民眾能體驗荷蘭人當時尋寶的過程，展場中也有淘沙金的體驗，讓民眾在過年期間到史前館來淘金。(記者 章明哲 台東報導)
