125年10月22日，彰化二林地方蔗農揭竿而起，反抗日本官員勾結財閥壓榨農民，這是台灣第一個農民抗暴的運動。
彰化二林地區的農民因不滿「林本源製糖會社」溪州工廠剝削，其收購價甘蔗價格較其他會社低，1924年4月推二林庄長林爐及醫生許學為蔗農代表，向會社要求支付臨時補貼，經北斗郡守調停，會社決定每甲支付五□補貼。此事件成功，刺激全島蔗農對製糖會社要求提高蔗價，12月20日台灣文化協會的文化演講團到二林開辦「農村講座」，刺激當地蔗農及青年的覺悟。
1925年1月1日由李應章、詹奕侯、劉崧甫、陳萬勤等召開農民大會，6月28日成立「二林蔗農組合」，以李應章為總理，並繼續爭取糖價。1925年10月，會社派員至蔗園採收，由於雙方談判破裂。10月22日七名警察及原料股長矢島等七人，監督30名工人採收謝材的蔗園，而與100餘名蔗農起衝突。
10月23日，台中州會同台中地方法院檢察官到二林庄逮捕93人，控以妨礙公務、傷害、騷擾等罪名。1927年4月13日三審定讞，共25人被判有罪、其中8人判緩刑，二林事件雖告失敗，卻成為台灣農民運動的先聲。
